Between 2015 and 2016, the number of bariatric surgeries performed in the United States grew by about 10 percent, according to new estimates from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

Sleeve gastrectomy remains the most common method, followed by gastric bypass.

The number of people in the United States that had a bariatric procedure in 2016 still represents only about 1 percent of the estimated 24 million adults who may be eligible for bariatric surgery.
