The American College of Surgeons honored Dr. Walter Pories as one of its Icons in Surgery (2016). This is bestowed upon “a surgeon who has made an extraordinary contribution to surgery, to medicine, and to mankind.” It was in 1995 that Dr. Pories was the lead author of “Who Would Have Thought It? An Operation Proves to Be the Most Effective Therapy for Adult-Onset Diabetes Mellitus, published in the Annals of Surgery. Dr. Pories was certainly ahead of his time as obesity experts and dozens of medical societies have endorsed and embraced bariatric and now, metabolic surgery, as an effective treatment option for type 2 diabetes. Dr. Pories has been a tremendous leader, researcher, surgeon, mentor, humanitarian and cartoonist who has certainly changed the world.
