Omaha Native “Walks Around the World” in Hopes of Raising Money to Help People Struggling with Obesity

After losing 180 pounds through rigorous weight-lifting, Ryan Newburn (AKA the Straw Hat Back Packer) will embark on a four-year adventure to walk around the world. On March 4, 24 year-old Newburn began his journey in Japan and will walk to New Zealand this year, and then Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand next year. Wearing a straw hat and a backpack, he hopes to walk parts of China and Russia in 2016, and enter Europe in 2017. He eventually will fly from Dublin to New York and finish off with a brisk walk across the United States. “I want to help obese people struggling with their weight, because it’s who I used to be and I know how hard it is to be overweight… It will be my goal to set up some sort of way to raise money on my walk, then donate it all to a charity that helps people struggling with weight loss,” Newburn commented on his blog.
