Dear fellow members, friends and colleagues:
Dr. Harvey Sugerman has to step down temporarily as chief editor of SOARD to attend to personal matters. While he does that, Dr. Bruce Wolfe has graciously accepted our invitation to become interim chief editor. We are thankful to Dr. Wolfe for stepping in and filling Harvey’s large shoes, at least temporarily.
On another note, we are thrilled with the recent publication of guidelines in the American Diabetes Association ’s (ADA), Diabetes Care, which endorsed metabolic surgery for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. If you have not yet done so, I strongly encourage you to review the multiple articles including the DSS statement that was endorsed by 45 societies including the ASMBS and ADA. I congratulate Francesco Rubino, MD and Phil Schauer, MD, for their leadership in putting together this strong statement, that in my opinion, will change the current treatment strategies of type 2 diabetes. The new guidelines emerged from the Second Diabetes Surgery Summit held in September 2015 in London.
On so many occasions, we question the current insurance guidelines that approve bariatric surgery only in patients with BMI greater than 35 with 2 serious comorbidities. With the clear scientific evidence that obesity is the cause of type 2 diabetes and the acknowledgement that the manipulation of gut hormones via metabolic surgery is recommended, I hope that insurers will change their recommendations and allow type 2 obese subjects with metabolic syndrome to undergo bariatric procedures.
In the past month, I had the opportunity to visit the ASMBS New York, Connecticut and Maryland Chapters annual meetings. I enjoyed interacting with fellow members and also updating them on the new developments and changes taking place in our society. It has been very gratifying to see our members come together to discuss clinical scenarios and address access issues in their respective states.
I am pleased to announce that the members have overwhelmingly approved the changes in bylaws. As we get closer to the election process, our members will receive an electronic ballot to both vote and approve that our Secretary Treasurer will become the new President-Elect, and to vote for a new Secretary-Treasurer from a list of nominees.
I look forward to seeing you at Aria Hotel in Las Vegas June 24-25th for Obesity Week-End. Our spring event has an outstanding program that is not to be missed.
