Draft MBSAQIP Standards Now Available for Public Comment –
Deadline August 23
On August 9, the Standards Subcommittee released revised draft standards for the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (Draft MBSAQIP Standards). ASMBS members may provide comments online during the public comment period which ends Friday, August 23, 2013. A letter from MBSAQIP and the survey may be found here on the ASMBS website.
Dr. Alan Wittgrove 2013 Recipient of ASMBS Foundation Outstanding Achievement Award
The ASMBS Foundation announced it will bestow its “2013 Outstanding Achievement Award” to past ASMBS President Alan Wittgrove, MD, FACS, FASMBS. Each year the Foundation honors an ASMBS member who has displayed a selfless commitment to the ASMBS and has made significant contributions to the field of metabolic and bariatric surgery.
Dr. Wittgrove performed the first laparoscopic gastric bypass in the world nearly 20 years ago. He has trained many surgeons on his laparoscopic technique and has been course director for numerous bariatric courses. Focusing primarily on gastric bypass, he has published extensively on his surgical technique and outcomes in bariatric surgery. According to the Foundation, "Dr. Wittgrove’s vision, insight and intellect makes him eminently qualified to receive this award." The award will be presented at the 1st annual ASMBS Foundation L.E.A.D. Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, November 12th, during the 30th ASMBS Annual Meeting at ObesityWeek in Atlanta.
Obesity Action Coalition Hosts “Your Weight Matters” Conference, Awards Several Honors
The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) handed out several awards at its 2nd Annual Your Weight Matters National Convention in August. Award recipients include:

Advanced Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy: Coding, Technique, Complications and Revisions Course to be Held in October
Daniel Herron MD, FACS and Ninh Nguyen MD, FACS will co-direct a course on advanced laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at the Marriott Metro Center in Washington, DC. The course, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., is intended for surgeons and integrated health professionals, including OR nurses, nurse practitioners, first assistants, physician assistants and other personnel, working in bariatric surgery who are currently performing or planning to perform laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. The session will focus on the technical aspects of sleeve gastrectomy, diagnosis and management of sleeve complications and sleeve revisions, as well as coding and billing issues.
